WebSockets and the Real-Time Web

AJAX was great for not refreshing the entire page every time we needed to make an HTTP request. But we still need a way for the browser to stay up to date with the latest data. For example, Facebook would be less interesting if we had to hit the refresh button every two seconds to see if anyone commented on our posts! Several strategies have been used over the years to enable real-time data publishing, including polling, long-polling (comet), and most recently, WebSockets, which gives us bi-directional transport.
